Full Fuseboard Upgrade in Coventry
18th Edition consumer unit install with alternative power during the swap
The Brief
A family home in Coventry was still running on an old plastic consumer unit with rewirable fuses and no RCD protection. The homeowners had experienced occasional nuisance tripping and wanted to bring their electrical installation up to the latest 18th Edition standards before remortgaging.
What We Did
Our work included:
- Pre-installation inspection: A full visual and test inspection of the existing circuits before any work started so we knew exactly what we were connecting the new board to.
- Alternative power setup: Supplied temporary power to keep the fridge, freezer, and key lights running while the main installation was isolated.
- Installed a new 18th Edition consumer unit: A modern metal-cased board with RCBO protection on every circuit, giving dedicated fault protection without losing the whole house when one circuit trips.
- Rewired and labelled each circuit: Every incoming cable terminated neatly, labelled clearly, and routed so the board stays tidy behind the cover.
- Full test and certification: Dead test, live test, and insulation resistance readings recorded for every circuit. Electrical Installation Certificate issued on completion.
- Handover: Walked the homeowners through the new layout, how to reset trip switches, and what to do if they ever need to isolate the supply.
The Result
A compliant, safer installation with clear circuit protection, proper labelling, and a fresh certificate for the homeowners' records. No more nuisance tripping, a cleaner finish behind the cover, and a full 12-month workmanship guarantee on the install.
Job Duration: One day from arrival to final commissioning and handover.
